Junction 36M6 Junction 36

Junction 36 was added to the M6 in 1970 for a few weeks it was the northern most junction of the longest section of the M6 at the time running from this junction at Farleton as far as Birmingham about 150 miles to the south. The Penrith Bypass which had opened in isolation a couple of years earlier was further north, on 11th October 1970 the gap was closed, this junction becoming a through junction, however over the 35 years since it opened this junction has undergone several changes which we will look at below:-

On opening the junction was designed as above with a layout very similar to junction 32 with a lane leaving the main carriageway going up the slip road and expanding to two lanes before coming to the roundabout. The layout of junction followed the pattern of that of a junction of two motorway's at the time designed as what was thought the be the best design for a busy junction, with signs to get in lane and overhead signs as you approached the junction, however the irony was the was one of the quietest junction's on the M6 at the time, traffic for Kendal, Barrow and the Lakes leaving at junction 35, although this junction was signposted Kendal, (it was obvious that there would be future developments as the signs clearly had areas 'blued' out and no road numbers for traffic leaving) it in reality just served several small villages. However by the mid 1970's things had altered: -

In the mid 1970's what was called the Kendal link was completed. A two lane dual carriageway linking junction 36 with the A6 at Sizergh about 4 miles south of Kendal, this was designed to serve 3 areas, by leaving this new road where it ended and joining the A6 south the A590 Trunk Road to Barrow could be accessed. The new dual carriageway joined an existing piece of dual carriageway so by continuing straight on and joining the A6 north traffic could either leave at the next main junction, the A6 for Kendal or continue along the A591 to Windermere. As the journey to Barrow included about a mile of single carriageway of the A6 a lot of Barrow traffic used junction 35 despite being signed to the contrary, this changed somewhat when a dual carriageway curve was put in to link the A590 at Levens with the A6 at Sizergh, the dual carriageway portion of the A6 and the link to the motorway now being renumbered A590. Along with this a third lane was added both ways on the M6 under the junction, the signing becoming the more normal 1 mile, 1/2 mile and large junction signs. The layout is now as shown below:-
